Gomez recently returned to their (almost) hometown, with the majority of the original lineup living in and around the city.
Having been fortunate enough to cover their 25th-anniversary opening show of Bring It On, this was an entirely different experience and show to cover.
Support Act(s)
Buddy, a warm, funny, and interesting singer-songwriter from the USA, opened the show. He was fantastic with the crowd, keeping the full room engaged, and even ventured out into the audience great to watch, but tricky to capture!
The Main Event
Gomez recently returned to their (almost) hometown, with the majority of the original lineup living in and around the city. Having been fortunate enough to cover their 25th-anniversary opening show of Bring It On, I approached the pit with a lot of excitement to cover their Brighton leg of the new tour.
When Ian and Ben came on stage, the energy in the room changed. The silence of anticipation was almost deafening. I wasn’t sure how it would work with just two members, but they did it. Looking through the lens, I almost forgot there were more people last time; though they were missed, it was incredible just how much you can do when less needs more.
Ben’s voice is so unique and recognisable in an instant. With Ian’s in harmony, it was a delight to cover, and over too soon. Before I knew it, the magic door to the photo pit was opened and that was it.
Highlights
It is always an honour to photograph any musician, but there is somethign special about capturing shows by performers you have listented to for yerars, it was a tu pleasure to capture the multi award wining band, again, in one of the most iconic venues in the country.
Photographing the Night
The concorde is alweays a wonderful pit to shoot in, there is normally enough room to manoeuvre around other photographers, but this evening, it was just me there.
Shooting the pit at The Concorde with the OM System OM-5 and the nifty 50 (equivalent!). 24-80 2.8 mm 40–150 f4 mm, the backlit stage made for a slightly tricky shoot, but experience, and kit lens to shoot with intent and purpose, capturing the best of the show.
Verdict
Though not the full line up , Gomez are true masters of their craft, and Ben’s voice is so unique, it was tricky not to have the hairs stand on the back of the neck when he belted out the classics!
