When was the last time you updated your profile photo or had a headshot update?
Headshots aren’t just an avatar on your profile; they’re your first introduction and help make the right connections.
With most people looking online, your headshot is often the first impression you make. It’s almost your online version of a handshake, whether used on LinkedIn, Facebook or even your business card, first impressions make a difference.
Which is best for you, Headshot or Portrait..?
It can be difficult at the best of times to find a photographer that suits your needs (and budget), just a quick online search yields thousands of results, making it tricky to choose and think “Which photographer will be right for me?” but before you delve into the incredible portfolios of each different photographer, firstly, are you looking for a Headshot or a Portrait?
Let’s take a quick look at the difference between the two:
Headshots:
It’s more than a close-up; it’s the equivalent of a handshake, a quick introduction, saying hello, this is me.
The main focus of a headshot will be on your face, from the shoulders up. It’s all about capturing a quick look at who you are, showing confidence, and approachability
Your headshot is often your introduction; as we all know, first Impressions make a difference.
Whether on your social media profile, business card, or website your headshot wants to be consistent and friendly across them all.
Isn’t that a Portrait?
Portraits are a bit different, capturing more of who you are and sharing more of a story with your followers.
Showing more than a close-up of your face, shoulders and neck, portraits capture more of your story, giving your audience more of a real look at who you are what you do, why you do and who you are doing It for.
Portraits allow your audience to see the real you and capture more than a headshot, it can be difficult to choose when to go for Portraits or headshots.
Portraits are often associated with family photos, weddings as well as pets too.
Some photographers offer a pop-up studio day, where you can have the option of a headshot taken, and this can be a good way to find out more about the photographer, as well as find out what’s right for you.
Depending on where you are on your journey, you may only need to start with an updated headshot for your website, LinkedIn profile, and business card, (that isn’t a nice snap on the beach, a selfie in a posh loo or a candid shot from that wedding a few years ago), and get you started and introduce yourself, to prospective clients, Portraits may be something you will want to look at later down the line.
Which do you need to stand head and shoulders above the rest?
